THE CHARACTER AND ATTRIBUTES OF GOD To begin to understand God, one must first begin with a firm belief in God, as well as the Bible – from which we derive all authoritative knowledge of God. The next step is to examine the amazing attributes of God. Of all the numerous attributes, there are three that I feel are key to understanding God: His Holiness, Omnipotence, and Love. First, God’s Holiness implies a level of truth and perfection that surpasses anything else in this world. For God to be truly Holy, and be the standard of holiness overall, He must be absolutely perfect, completely true, and never changing. In fact, the changelessness of God is as critical to this piece as any other element because if God were to change for the better, it would imply that at some point He made imperfect decisions. If God were to change for the worse, it would imply that He is corrupted and no longer perfect. Only by being an unchanging God can He maintain a standard of holiness that is pure and perfect. Thorsen writes, â€Å"In the early church†¦mutability or change was not considered an appropriate attribute of God; changeability was considered an imperfection.† (Thorsen 67) God’s words and actions as well must be completely true and accurate if He is perfect, thus implying His omniscience as well. If we believe God to be a holy and perfect God, we must accept that His Word is Truth and we can accept everything He says without question.
